Jan. 25, 2005
The Princeton University Department of Athletics will hold its sixth annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, February 5, 2005, at 5:30pm at Jadwin Gym on the Princeton University Campus. The event will feature an interactive sports festival before Princeton's women's basketball team takes on Ivy League rival Harvard in the marquis event of a full day of Princeton women's athletic competitions.
The Interactive Sports Fair will offer participants that chance to learn about different sports and practice a variety of athletic techniques. Princeton University's female student-athletes will demonstrate proper form and coach participants on the fundamentals of a variety of sports, including lacrosse, soccer, rowing, softball, field hockey, golf, diving, cheerleading, and basketball. Participants will also have a chance to learn about the "Science of Sports" thanks to volunteers from Princeton's Teacher Prep Program. Princeton students will demonstrate some of the basics of chemistry and physics using sports equipment and skills.
After the sports fair, Princeton's women's basketball team tips off against the Harvard Crimson. The game is filled with special extras for Tigers fans, starting with a pre-game courtside chat with former WNBA President Val Ackerman. Excelled Gymnastics will perform during halftime, and the Lady Tigers Basketball team will autograph complimentary pictures for fans after the game.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day was chartered by Congress in 1986 in memory of former U.S. Olympic volleyball team captain Flo Hyman, who passed away during a tournament in Japan. Princeton's event will be one of hundreds taking place across the country to honor female athletic achievement and recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for girls and women.
