ITHACA, N.Y. - The Princeton men's hockey team scored early in the third to get within two goals, but fell to No. 11 Cornell 4-1 on Friday night at Lynah Rink. Junior Darroll Powe scored his first goal of the season in the loss for Princeton.
The Tigers fell to 3-8 on the season and 2-7 in the ECAC Hockey League with the loss.
Cornell's defense stifled the Tigers throughout allowing Princeton just two shots in the first period and five in the second. That said, sloppy play by the Big Red in the neutral zone contributed to Princeton getting a few good chances, but wide shots and a little help from the cross bar on a shot by senior Patrick Neundorfer.
Cornell went ahead with the game's first goal 2:15 into the game on the power play. The goal came after Ryan O'Byrne's blast from the point sailed wide by the Princeton net, but the puck ricocheted off the boards right to the side of the net, where Byron Bitz was waiting for it and he was able to get the puck just over the line before Princeton pulled it back out.
Cornell made the score 2-0 at 12:37 of the first period when Chris Abbott capped off a give-and-go deep in the Tiger zone with a shot just inside the post. Cornell made the score 3-0 with another power-play goal, this time coming in the second period. The goal came when Daniel Pegoraro deposited a pass from Mark McKutcheon. Pegoraro was waiting on the doorstep as the pass traveled along the blueline and one-timed it for the goal.
Princeton started the third period with an extra step after scoring to make the score 3-1 nine seconds into the period. After a face-off win to start the period, senior defensemen Seamus Young and Brian Carthas exchanged passes, before Carthas hit junior Darroll Powe at the blue line. Powe took two strides, then fired a shot that got the glove of Cornell goaltender David McKee and then the post before bouncing in for Powe's first goal of the season. That was as close as Princeton could get however as Cornell added an empty-net goal Tyler Mudford scored into the empty-net at 18:34.
Princeton junior Eric Leroux finished the game with 37 saves while McKee made 17.
Princeton completes its weekend with tomorrow night's game at Colgate. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
