PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Princeton wrestling coach Mike New felt confident that his improved Tiger wrestling squad would be significantly more competitive with Rutgers than it has been in several years. His optimism proved prophetic, as Princeton held a lead through nine matches before finally falling in a 22-21 decision in Piscataway.
Princeton fell to 4-2 with the loss, but it took a full team effort from the Scarlet Knights to hand Princeton the loss. Both teams split pins in the first two matches of the evening, including a Tiger win from Danny Scotton in 6:08 of the 133-pound match.
Rutgers built a five-point lead three matches later. Despite a major decision for Andrew Iannuzzi at 149 pounds, Rutgers got a decision at 141 and a pin at 157 to open a 15-10 lead.
New needed veterans Marty Everin and Matt DeNichilo to come up big at that point, and they responded to the challenge. Everin shut out Robert Kaiser 3-0 at 165 pounds, and DeNichilo pulled out a 2-1 victory at 174 pounds. DeNichilo's win gave Princeton its first lead of the match, a 16-15 advantage.
Rutgers got a major decision from Rudy Medini at 184 pounds, but Princeton countered with its big gun, 197-pound senior Jake Butler. The 2005 NCAA representative tech falled Lamar Brown 20-4 to open a 21-19 lead. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to clinch the match, and Rutgers heavyweight Mike D'Amico closed the match with a 9-3 win.
