PRINCETON -- The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team took the lead in the third quarter and pulled away for a 12-10 win over No. 17 Bucknell on Tuesday night at DeNunzio Pool.
The win moved Princeton to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in the CWPA and finished the regular season second in the CWPA Southern Division standings. The Tigers will likely be the second seed at the Southern Championships, which will be held the weekend of October 28 and 29 at Bucknell.
Bucknell led throughout much of the first half, scoring on its first possession and taking a 3-2 lead by the end of the opening period. Princeton tied the score on two occasions and led the game at 5-4 midway through the second quarter, but Bucknell scored the final two goals of the period to lead 6-5 at halftime.
The Tigers took control of the game at both ends of the pool in the decisive third quarter as the Tiger offense provided two goals to take the lead for good and the Tiger defense, led by several saves from Scott Syverson, shut down Bucknell, holding the Bison off the scoreboard. Princeton evened the score at 6-6 at 3:10 and took the 7-6 lead on Reid Joseph's 5-meter goal.
From there Princeton maintained the lead and padded it in a five goal final quarter. Bucknell scored four times in the final frame to reach the 12-10 final. Princeton scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to open up a more comfortable lead and did not allow Bucknell to get within two goals during the fourth quarter.
