Men's Squash Opens Ivy Title Defense With 9-0 Win Over Cornell
November 19, 2006 | Men's Squash
The first match of the post-Yasser El Halaby Era was a success for the Princeton men's squash team, which defeated Cornell 9-0 in the season opener for both programs. Led by the top three members of the brilliant sophomore class, including Yasser's brother Hesham, the Tigers won 27 of 28 games to coast to victory.
The new No. 1 player is Mauricio Sanchez, who was an All-America standout at No. 2 last season. The 2006 national individual semifinalist defeated Chris Sachvie 9-2, 9-1, 9-5, and classmate Kimlee Wong was equally impressive at No.2, losing only eight points in a 3-0 win. El Halaby, playing No. 3, had a tough first game, but he cruised after the 9-7 opening win to clinch that match with 9-3 and 9-1 wins.
One Tiger made his collegiate debut, and it was a successful one. Santiago Imberton topped Ted Hill 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 at No. 5.
