Men's Squash Gets Back On Track, Tops Penn 8-1

PHILADELPHIA - The men's squash team visited Penn Wednesday night in need of some positive momentum. Heading into a critical road weekend, the Tigers were in search of a win, and preferably one that wasn't decided by the final match. Led by its fantastic freshman on top, Princeton got its wish in an 8-1 win at Penn.
After losing back-to-back 5-4 heartbreakers last week, Princeton took care of business immediately Wednesday night, and the dominance began with the three freshmen at the top of the lineup. With senior Yasser El Halaby sitting out of his second straight match, freshman Mauricio Sanchez moved up to No. 1 and topped Gilly Lane 3-0.
Classmates Kimlee Wong and Hesham El Halaby followed suit, taking respective 3-0 wins, and No. 4 Vincent Yu lost only three points in a 3-0 win of his own.
Two matches went five games, and both teams won one of them. At No. 5, senior Mate Beck was shut out in the first game and trailed two games to one, but he rallied for wins of 9-6 and 9-7 to claim the match.
At No. 7, Penn's Jacob Himmelrich played an inspired match on Senior Night. He rallied from 2-1 down in games to win a pair of thrillers (9-8 and 10-8) to top Michael Gilman.
Princeton had clinched the match long before Himmelrich's match was complete. Wins from Dent Wilkens (No. 6), Tom McKay (No. 8) and Tim Callahan (No. 9) gave Princeton a comfortable edge. For Callahan, it was the continuation of an amazing week; his thrilling win at No. 9 against Yale was overshadowed by the team loss, but it was quite a performance from a player who was just called up from the JV squad following El Halaby's injury. That injury leaves the three-time national champion questionable for this weekend, when Princeton travels to Dartmouth and Harvard for its final matches before the CSA team championships, which will be held at Princeton from Feb. 17-19. A sweep this weekend would likely ensure Princeton a No. 3 seed behind Trinity and Yale.
