PRINCETON - Fans of Princeton crew will have one opportunity this season to come out and support all four programs, and it's coming up quickly. This Saturday, April 1, will feature racing for each of the four crews, including a pair of top-ranked teams, the men's heavyweights and the women's open.
Beginning with the open women's third varsity race at 10:45, three hours of solid competition will begin on Lake Carnegie. The open women, ranked first in the country and building off last weekend's sweep of Brown and Michigan, will welcome Rutgers, Columbia and Georgetown. The first varsity competition will be held at 12:15.
The men's heavyweights will compete for the Logg Cup against local rival Rutgers. Curtis Jordan's program opens the season atop the preseason poll. The first varsity boat, which made waves in the fall by winning the Head of the Charles, will compete at 12:30.
The men's lightweights will look for their first win of the season in the Fosburgh Cup against Georgetown. New head coach Greg Hughes dropped his debut in tight fashion, losing by just over a second last weekend at Navy. This will be Hughes' home debut for the team he led to a pair of national championships as an undergraduate. The first varsity race will be held at 12:45.
The women's lightweights are coming off a 2-1 performance at the Windermere Classic last weekend and will take on Bucknell. Only one week away from its competition in the Knecht Cup, which will likely match up most of the preseason favorites, the Tigers will went to keep gelling into top form. The first varsity race will be at 1:00.
Following the competitions, there will be a boat christening that is expected to draw plenty of alumni. The boat is named for George T. Clements '86. He was a loved member of the Class of '86 who died in an industrial accident after graduating. The gift came from members of the heavyweight, lightweight and women's crews of that era as well as George's family.
