Men's Water Polo Splits Games; Tops Bucknell, Falls to Navy

PRINCETON -- The 18th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team split two league games on Saturday afternoon. Princeton dropped its opener 13-8 to 13th-ranked Navy, then edged 14th-ranked Bucknell 5-4 as Princeton moved to 10-5 on the season.
In the opener, senior Zach Beckmann scored five Tiger goals in the loss. Navy jumped out to a 5-2 lead after a quarter and never looked back en route to the win. Princeton closed the lead to 5-4 at the half before Navy pulled away again over the second half. Junior Brendan Colgan, sophomore Matt Hudnall and freshman Peter Schulam scored single goals and senior Scott Syverson made eight saves.
In the second game the Tigers broke a 3-3 halftime tie with two goals in the third quarter, then hold on in the fourth for the one-goal win. The scored was tied at one after one and was even at three at the half. Junior Alex Edmunds and freshman Jeff Cole scored third quarter goals to put Princeton ahead for good. Bucknell scored the game's final goal with just over a minute remaining but could not draw even.
Sophomore Scott Hvidt started the game in goal and made four saves in the first half, while freshman Mike Merlone got the win with nine saves on 10 shots on goal in the final half.
Princeton is back in action next weekend at the SoCal Tournament at UC Irvine.
