Top-Ranked Trinity Men's Squash Tops No. 2 Princeton 7-2 In Regular Season Finale
February 17, 2007 | Men's Squash
The No. 2 and Ivy League champion Princeton men's squash team got wins from Mauricio Sanchez and Kimlee Wong, but the top-ranked Trinity Bantams were too much at the middle and bottom of the lineup for the Tigers. Trinity extended its win streak to 162 matches with a 7-2 win at Princeton in the regular season finale for both teams. They could face each other again next Sunday if both reach the Potter Cup team finals.
Played in a three-round format, Trinity got an immediate lead with a 3-0 win by No. 9 Simbararshe Muhwati over Princeton's Tom McKay. There would be moments of optimism to follow for Princeton, as both No. 3 Kimlee Wong and No. 8 Michael Gilman grabbed early leads in their matches, and No. 6 David Canner rallied for a third-game win against Manek Mathur to cut his deficit to 2-1. Had all three of those matches swung Princeton's way, the tension level would have raised significantly. Unfortunately for the home team, only one would work out. Wong defeated Gustav Detter 3-1 after rallying from a big deficit in the fourth game, but both Canner and Gilman would fall in four games.
Trinity's Beset Chaudhry outplayed Hesham El Halaby at No. 2 to claim the Bantams' fourth win of the match, and No. 5 Eduardo Pereira won a marathon 9-7, 3-9, 9-6, 3-9, 9-6 battle with fellow South American Santiago Imberton, a Princeton freshman who impressed the crowd with his tenacity and resilience. Unfortunately, the Trinity veteran had enough shots at the end to claim the win.
Sanchez, Princeton's No. 1, remained perfect on the season with a 9-4, 9-5, 9-1 win over Shaun Johnstone. Coming off last weekend's impressive 3-0 win over Harvard's Siddharth Suchde, Sanchez remains unbeaten in a single game this season.
Trinity finished the match with wins by Sahil Vora and Supreet Singh.
Princeton will enter next weekend as the No. 2 seed, and will likely draw Williams in the first round of the Potter Cup. Should form hold, the Tigers will face No. 3 Harvard in a rematch of last weekend's exciting 6-3 Tiger win, which clinched the 2007 Ivy League title.
