Men's Squash Falls 9-0 In The National Final To Top-Ranked Trinity
February 25, 2007 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team hit an emotional high during Saturday's 5-4 CSA semifinal victory over Ivy League rival Harvard. The Tigers could not reach the same high in Sunday's national final, thanks in large part to a dominant top-seeded Trinity College. The Bantams swept the lineup to claim their ninth straight team title, while Princeton placed second again with a lineup the featured three sophomores and two freshmen for the majority of the season.
"There is a good reason Trinity is national champion," head coach Bob Callahan said. "They were very impressive today. We gave it our all today, but they were too strong."
Princeton, which had lost 7-2 to Trinity last weekend, played this weekend without No. 6 player David Canner, and it also dealt with some injuries through the weekend to the likes of Vincent Yu and Santiago Imberton. It also dealt with one of the best Trinity teams in recent years, especially with powerful freshman Baset Chaudhry, who was moved to No. 1 prior to the championship weekend. Chaudhry is a former winner of the British Jr. Open, a tournament that former Princetonian Yasser El Halaby won prior to his individual dominance of the college scene over the last four years. Chaudhry became the first collegiate player to defeat Princeton No. 1 Mauricio Sanchez this season; the Tiger sophomore won the first game 9-4, but he dropped the next three 9-2, 9-2 and 9-1.
By that time, the team title had been decided. A 3-2 win at No. 3 by Gustav Detter over Kimlee Wong gave Trinity a 3-0 lead and all but clinched the title. A 3-0 win by Eduardo Pereira at No. 5 did clinch the title for the Bantams.
The 2007 Ivy League champion Princeton Tigers ended another terrific season 10-2 overall and ranked No. 2 in the country.
