Wrestling Falls In Maryland Home Opener
December 14, 2008 | Wrestling
Freshman Kurt Brendel picked up the only win for the Princeton wrestling team in a 46-3 loss to a talented Maryland squad Sunday in the Terrapins' home opener. Brendel, who won two matches in a quad meet Saturday at Dillon Gym, picked up a 5-1 victory over Owen Smith at 184 pounds.
The match started with a pair of forfeit losses for Princeton at 197 pounds and heavyweight. Maryland picked up 18 more points with falls at 125, 133 and 141 pounds; both pins at 133 and 141 pounds were recorded by Top 20 competitors. Princeton's first close match came at 149 pounds, when Danny Scotton took Steve Fehnel to overtime before falling 6-4.
Another pin at 157 pounds left Princeton down 39-0, and two more decisions, including a major at 165 pounds, put Princeton down 46-0 with one match remaining. Brendel, the talented Princeton freshman upperweight, made sure Princeton got on the board with a 5-1 win.
