December 29, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Junior Dan Bartlett scored two goals on a night when five Tigers recorded two points to lead the eighth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-2 win over 17th-ranked Minnesota State at Hobey Baker Rink.
After jumping to a 3-0 lead, the Tigers watched as the Mavericks cut the lead to a goal when Geoff Irwin scored a shorthanded goal late in the second period and Mike Louwerse scored on the power play three minutes into the second period. The Tigers rallied back from the Maverick run however, and scored two goals in a 58-second span to regain the three-goal margin and hold on for the win.
Bartlett scored at 5:44 of the third period as he ripped a shot past the outstretched glove of Minnesota State goaltender Mike Zacharias to put Princeton ahead 4-2 and senior Brett Wilson scored on the power play less than a minute later to reach the final 5-2 margin. Sophomores Matt Godlewski and Sam Sabky assisted on Bartlett's goal, while defensemen Jody Pederson and Taylor Fedun got the helpers on Wilson's power-play marker.
The Tigers scored the game's first goal and never trailed as Bartlett put Princeton ahead 1-0 at 14:51 of the first period when he gained the puck behind the net and skated in front to score on the short side through a screen. Sabky and Godlewski got the assists on the goal.
Princeton built its lead to 3-0 with two power-play goals early in the second period. Pederson netted his second of the year at 1:55 when Wilson hit him with a pass as Pederson cheated to the back door from his spot at the point. Freshman Marc Hagel also assisted on the goal. Freshman Derrick Pallis made it 3-0 at 4:31 when his blast from the point beat Zacharias top shelf. Senior Brandan Kushniruk and sophomore Kevin Lohry got assists.
Junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 31 saves for the win while Zacharias stopped 37. Each team had seven power-play chances, with Princeton cashing in on three attempts and Minnesota State on one.
The Tigers improved to 11-2-0 on the season and continue their homestand tomorrow night against Nebraska-Omaha.
