February 01, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union jumped to a 4-0 lead then held off a furious charge to defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 4-3 on Friday night at Messa Rink. Princeton scored three goals in the final seven minutes of the game.
Union controlled play from the outset and had a 3-0 lead less than nine minutes into the period. Mario Valery-Trabucco scored the first goal when he deflected a fluttering puck into the Tigers goal, and that started a stretch of three goals in 4:31 of action. Matt Cook scored the second goal on the power play and Torren Delforte notched the third when he followed up the rebound of his own shot.
Union extended its lead with a power-play goal midway through the second period as Stephane Boileau capped a nice passing play with a goal from the far post.
Princeton stormed back into the game in the second half of the third period, scoring three times with the goaltender pulled to move within a goal at the end of the game. Princeton scored the first goal at 12:58 when sophomore Cam MacIntyre found freshman Mike Kramer for his sixth goal of the season. Junior Brett Wilson also assisted on the goal, which came on the power play.
Princeton moved within two goals at 14:50 when freshman Taylor Fedun scored on a backhander for his third of the season. The goal was set up by Kramer and senior Mike Moore. Princeton's third goal came in the final minute when Wilson netted his eighth of the season from junior Lee Jubinville. The goal was scored but played continued and the horn sounded. The goal was then put on the board and the final 10 seconds were replayed, but Union held off Princeton for the win.
Princeton is now 11-9-0 overall and 8-5-0 in ECAC Hockey with the loss, which snaps a six-game winning streak. Princeton is back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Rensselaer.
