No. 2 Men's Squash Sweeps Dartmouth, Will Face Yale In CSA Semifinal
February 15, 2008 | Men's Squash
The No. 2 Princeton men's squash team was a perfect 27-for-27 Friday morning in the quarterfinal round of the CSA national team championships, held in Cambridge, Mass. Princeton swept Dartmouth for the second time in six days to earn a semifinal berth against No. 3 Yale, which topped Penn 7-2 in the quarterfinals.
With members of the Princeton men's hockey team, who will be playing Harvard later Friday night, supporting their classmates, the Ivy League champion men's squash team swept every game against the Big Green. Junior Mauricio Sanchez took out Andrew Boumford 9-0, 9-1, 9-4 in the No. 1 match, while classmate Kimlee Wong lost only two points in the No. 2 match. Freshman Dave Letourneau, playing in his first national team championships, lost only four games to keep his perfect record intact.
Brothers Peter and Philip Sopher were also perfect in their CSA debuts. Peter Sopher dropped only one point in a 3-0 win at No. 8, while Philip, who is returning from an injury that kept him out of the previous Dartmouth match, claimed a 9-0, 9-5, 9-5 win over Ted Schroeder.
Princeton will now take on Yale in a noon semifinal at Harvard. Princeton swept Yale 9-0 in the regular season, although the Bulldogs have switched six players either a spot above or a spot below their position from the Feb. 2 showdown, so their will be new matchups to watch. The only three matchups that are the same are No. 1, where Sanchez defeated an injured Max Samuel in three games and Nos. 8 and 9, where the Sopher brothers topped Colin Campbell and Naishadh Lalwani, respectively, in four-game matches.
The winner of the noon match will play for the national championship against the winner of the 3 p.m. semifinal between Trinity and Harvard.
