Men's Squash Announces Class Of 2012
June 12, 2008 | Men's Squash
Princeton men's squash coach Bob Callahan, who has guided Princeton to three straight Ivy League titles and national team finals, announced the four members of his Class of 2012 recently.
“This is an important group for us, with three of our top players of all time going into their final year,” Callahan said. “I feel very good about this incoming class. There is plenty of talent and experience, but they are also good kids who will really fit the chemistry of the program.”
Canadian Kelly Shannon, a close friend of current Princeton standout and reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year David Letourneau, took last year off to train for the World Junior Championships held this summer in Zurich. Shannon, a multiple Canadian Junior and American Junior Open Champion, will play No. 1 for Canada at the upcoming World Championships. He is a very talented shotmaker who could contend for one of the top spots in the lineup.
Chris Callis is currently ranked second among U.S. juniors, but he was the highest-ranked American college recruit. He led Penn Charter, a Philadelphia-area school, to two consecutive national high school championships and has been ranked first or second in his age division for the past six years. Like Shannon, he is a skilled shotmaker who will bring a passion for the sport and significant international experience to Princeton next year. Callis could contend for a spot near the top of the lineup during his freshman season.
Jesus Pena is the second-ranked player in Mexico and a friend of reigning Ivy League Player of the Year and Princeton No. 1 player Mauricio Sanchez. Pena, who played two years at The Loomis Chaffee School, finished as a finalist in the New England prep school championships. He is a disciplined and hard-working player with the talent to challenge for an immediate lineup spot.
Clay Blackiston is the sixth-ranked American junior player, and will play for the U.S. Junior team at the World Championships in Zurich this summer. A Brunswick School graduate, where he helped his team to the national prep school finals, Blackiston has shown tremendous improvement this year and Callahan looks forward to seeing how far he develops at Princeton.
