Men's Water Polo Picks Up League Win at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE -- The 19th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team topped No. 18 Johns Hopkins 15-14 on Saturday afternoon to win pick up a win in its first CWPA Southern Division game of the season. Sophomore Jeff Cole scored four goals in the win.
The Tigers and Blue Jays played an even first quarter that eneded tied at 3-3, but the Tigers pulled ahead in the second quarter to lead 7-6. Junior Mark Zalewski, who tallied four goals in the game, contributed all four goals in the opening half of play.
Princeton continued to lead in the second half and at one point led by three goals at 11-8 before Johns Hopkins scored the last two goals of the third period, which ended with Princeton ahead 11-10. Princeton stayed ahead in the final quarter until the Blue Jays were able to knot the score at 14-14, but Cole's fourth goal of the season broke the deadlock and proved to be the deciding goal as Princeton took the 15-14 victory.
Cole and Zalewski each scored four goals in the win, while junior Eric Vreeland added three goals, all of which came on 5-meter shots. Sophomore Matt Hale added two goals, while junior David de L'Arbre and senior Alex Edmunds added single goals. Sophomore Mike Merlone made 15 saves for the win, including a 5-meter save in the second quarter.
Princeton improved to 4-4 with the win and has now won three-straight games. The Tigers continue their day tonight at 8 p.m. at No. 14 Navy.
