Early Goal Gives Cornell 1-0 Win Over Princeton in Women's Hockey
November 21, 2009 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/20/09) - Catherine White scored less than three minutes into the first period and the 1-0 score would stand as the No. 7-ranked Cornell women's hockey team defeated Princeton on Friday, Nov. 20 at Hobey Baker Rink.
Teammate Melanie Jue had the initial shot that went off the pads of netminder Rachel Weber and popped free. White got her stick on the puck and dragged it across the goal mouth and stuffed it in on the glove side. Chelsea Karpenko was credited with the feed to Jue.
The Big Red continued to dominate the first half, outshooting the Tigers, 12-1.
Princeton was a different team in the next two periods, as the teams were neck-and-neck in shots, 14-13. After making just one stop in the first period, Cornell's Amanda Mazzotta was tested 14 times and came up with a save on each shot to prevent the equalizer.
Princeton was 0-for-3 on the power play, and Cornell was 0-for-2.
Cornell improves to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in ECAC Hockey action, while Princeton falls to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play.
Princeton hosts Colgate tomorrow, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m. The Raiders skated to a 1-1 draw with Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., tonight.
