Men's Squash Opens 2009-10 Season With Sweep Of Western Ontario
November 22, 2009 | Men's Squash
Freshman No. 1 player Todd Harrity dropped only 10 points in his collegiate debut victory in Princeton's season-opening 9-0 victory over Western Ontario.
Harrity only slightly topped junior All-America teammate David Letourneau, who dropped only 11 points in his win at No. 2. In the new collegiate squash scoring system, games are played to 11 and points are scored every time the ball is in play, not just on your serve. Princeton's top two players had the most dominant wins, but the remainder of the lineup found ways to pull out victories.
Playing without All-America sophomores Chris Callis and Kelly Shannon, Princeton used its strong depth to open the season with a win. Senior captains David Canner and Santiago Imberton picked up wins at the No. 3 and 4 spots, and David Pena went the distance in a 3-2 victory. Four of Pena's games would be two-point decisions, including a trio of 13-11 wins. Pena won the finale 11-9.
Peter Sopher, Clay Blackiston and Nikhil Seth each won four-game decisions, while freshman Stephen Harrington made his collegiate debut with a 3-2 win at the No. 8 position. Like Pena, Harrington went the distance in the final game to win 11-9.
Princeton will open its Ivy League season Sunday afternoon against Cornell, which was ranked fourth nationally at the end of the 2008-09 regular season.
