Squash Sweeps Penn, Will Take On Rochester In National Semifinal
February 20, 2009 | Men's Squash
The 2009 Ivy League champion Princeton men's squash team moved one step closer to a fourth straight national final Friday with a 9-0 sweep of the seventh-seeded Penn Quakers. The win moves Princeton into a semifinal showdown with Rochester, which upset No. 3 Yale 5-4 during the quarterfinal round.
Princeton, which defeated Rochester 9-0 on Super Bowl Sunday, will play the Yellowjackets in the first semifinal Saturday at noon on Jadwin Courts 1, 2 and 3. The winner will play the winner of the second semifinal, which pits No. 1 Trinity against No. 5 Harvard.
The quarterfinals were the highlight of the first day of the CSA national team squash championships, which brought 56 college teams to the Princeton area to compete in eight different divisions. The ?A' Division, which includes the top eight teams in the nation, plays for the Potter Cup, which crowns the national champion.
With earlier matches running long, Princeton's quarterfinal match against Penn was delayed slightly, but that hardly affected the host school. Senior tri-captain Hesham El Halaby was the first to take the court, and he made quick work of Joe Raho in the No. 6 match. El Halaby, a veteran of the team championships, moved Raho around the court and controlled play in a 3-0 win.
At that point, all of the courts began to open, and Princeton was taking full control of the match. Princeton ended up winning all 27 games, including 21 by scores of either 9-0, 9-1 or 9-2.
Princeton will now face Rochester, which qualified for its first national semifinal with an exciting 5-4 victory over Yale. In a match played at the Lawrenceville School, both teams were even at 4-4 with only the No. 4 match to be played. Rochester freshman Matthew Domenick saw an 8-3 lead evaporate in a fourth-game loss to Aaron Fuchs, which left the team match to come down to one game. Domenick regained the momentum and pulled out the final game to send Rochester into a semifinal showdown with Princeton.
