Men's Squash Makes Program History With Fourth Straight Ivy Title
February 07, 2009 | Men's Squash
The 2008-09 Princeton men's squash team still has some major goals
ahead of it, but the first trophy has been secured. With a 9-0 win over
Dartmouth, the Tigers clinched at least a share of their 16th straight
Ivy League title, and they made program history with their fourth
league crown in a row.
Princeton won 27 of 29 games against the Big Green despite having an injury-depleted lineup. Head coach Bob Callahan is hopeful that some of his typical starters, including Kimlee Wong, Hesham El Halaby and Santiago Imberton, will be able to return to the Jadwin Squash Courts Sunday when Princeton faces Harvard. At stake for the Tigers would be the outright title, their 20th consecutive Ivy League win and no worse than a second seed in the CSA team championships, held Feb. 20-22 in Princeton.
The Tigers were led by senior No. 1 Mauricio Sanchez, who dropped only seven points against Dartmouth's Andrew Boumford. Freshman Chris Callis, who is among a number of underclassmen who hope to carry on the program's success over the coming years, lost only one point to Nick Sisodia in a 3-0 victory at No. 2.
The match of the day came at No. 9, where Nikhil Seth held on for a 3-2 win over Luke Lee. Seth took a couple of tight 9-7 wins to build a 2-0 lead in the match, but Lee fought back to take the next two games. Seth had enough in reserve at the end to take the match with a 9-2 win. Sophomore Peter Sopher had a dramatic game of his own at the No. 5 position; en route to his 3-0 win over Michael Lewis, Sopher had to pull out a 10-8 victory in the second game.
Princeton will now turn its focus to No. 5 Harvard, which will look to build on the excitement of a 5-4 win at Penn. The match will begin at 3 p.m., but squash fans should get to Jadwin much earlier than that; at noon, the top-ranked Princeton women will play for the Ivy League title against Harvard, which is coming off a 7-2 win over defending Ivy champion Penn Saturday.
