Erin McDermott Promoted To Executive Associate Athletic Director
January 21, 2010 | General
McDermott, who came to Princeton in the fall of 2000 for a three-year term position mostly in compliance, has been promoted to Executive Associate Athletic Director, effective immediately. McDermott replaces Michael Cross, who left Princeton last month to become the Director of Athletics at Bradley.
"It has been gratifying to me to witness Erin's professional growth during the last 10 years," says Princeton Director of Athletics Gary Walters. "We're fortunate to have someone with her administrative competence and institutional knowledge ready to become our new Executive Associate Athletic Director. Erin's ascension has been universally received with genuine affection, respect and admiration for the job she's done here and for what she'll be able to do in the future."
McDermott will essentially be the chief operating officer of the athletic department, working with Walters on all aspects of the program. Her areas of direct oversight will include admissions, facilities, scheduling, event operations, intercollegiate programming and strength and conditioning.
She will also be the department's liaison to the athletic medicine staff and continue in her role as Senior Woman Administrator.
"It's a tremendous honor for me, and I am grateful to Gary for having this faith in me," McDermott says. "I am lucky to work with such great coaches, athletes, staff and other administrators. I respect and appreciate the efforts everyone here puts forth, and I feel there's common thought in what we all believe in and value. I'm looking forward to this new challenge."
McDermott is a 1994 graduate of Hofstra, where she played basketball and was named the school's top female scholar-athlete her senior year, and she went on to earn a master's degree in sport administration at the University of Massachusetts. Before coming to Princeton, she spent three years working in the athletic department at Columbia.
She is also a very active nationally in issues in college athletics, including a term on the Division I field hockey committee, for whom she spent two years as chair. She currently is the Ivy League representative to the NCAA's Championships Cabinet.
