Top-Ranked Trinity Handles Men's Squash 9-0
February 13, 2010 | Men's Squash
The Trinity Bantams proved once again that they were the dominant team in men's college squash and the clear favorites to win a 12th straight national team title next weekend at Yale. Trinity used superior depth to win its 221st straight match with a 9-0 victory over the fourth-ranked Tigers.
The loss basically cliches the fourth seed for Princeton in the national championships next weekend, leaving a dangerous road for the Tigers if they hope to play in a fifth straight national team final. Princeton will have to take on Harvard in the quarterfinals, and if it wins, will face Trinity in the semifinal.
Playing in three shifts, Trinity won two five-game matches in the opening shift to assume all momentum in the match. Reinhold Hergeth topped Clay Blackiston in four games at No. 9, and then both Supreet Singh (3) and Antonio Diaz Glez (6) won 3-2 matches over Chris Callis and Santiago Imberton, respectively. Singh rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win 11-6 and 11-6, while Imberton forced a fifth game with an 11-8 win in the fourth, but Diaz Glez put the match away 11-6.
Andres Vargas topped Peter Sopher 3-0 at No. 8 to give Trinity a 4-0 lead, and both No. 2 Parth Sharma and No. 5 Randy Lim won in five games. Sharma topped Dave Letourneau, who is coming back from an ankle injury, in four tight games in a rematch from last year's national team final. Lim topped Kelly Shannon 11-6 in the fourth, putting Trinity up 6-0 in a match already clinched for the Bantams.
Both Vikram Malhotra (4) and Chris Binnie (7) won in three games, leaving the remaining drama for the No. 1 match. Trinity senior Baset Chaudhry, the two-time defending national champion, faced off against Princeton freshman Todd Harrity, the third-ranked player in the country. Harrity won the opener 11-4 before falling 11-9. He came back with another 11-4 victory, but lost the fourth 11-7. The experienced Chaudhry put the match away 11-9 in the fifth, but Harrity proved he would be a real factor in the individual national championships next week.
Princeton concludes its regular season Sunday at Dillon Gym against the Williams Ephs.
