Bartlett Named Ivy League Women's Tennis Player of the Year
April 29, 2010 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- For just the second time in the 16-year history of the Ivy League Player of the Year award in women's tennis, the honor has gone to a Princetonian.
Hilary Bartlett was the unanimous choice among the league's coaches for the Ivy Player of the Year, joining Kavitha Krishnamurthy '02, in 2000, as the only Princeton players to win the honor. The Ivy League began naming a player of the year in 1995.
In a league with five of its eight teams ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 60, Bartlett went undefeated in the top singles spot in all seven Ivy League matches.
Bartlett, a sophomore, was also a unanimous choice alongside junior Taylor Marable as a first-team All-Ivy doubles selection. Presently at No. 27 on the ITA singles list, the pair are the highest-ranked duo in the Ivy League.
Sisters Melissa and Rachel Saiontz, a senior and sophomore respectively, were each named second-team All-Ivy League as singles players and were second-team All-Ivy in doubles as a pair.
The appearance on the first-team singles and doubles lists is a repeat for Bartlett, who made both as a freshman. Marable was second-team All-Ivy singles and honorable mention All-Ivy doubles in 2008 before gaining honorable mention singles and first-team doubles, alongside Bartlett, last year.
The doubles honor is the first for Melissa Saiontz, who has now won All-Ivy singles honors in each of her four seasons. She claimed a first-team singles place in 2007 and was second-team singles each of the last two seasons. Rachel Saiontz was a second-team singles player a year ago and won honorable mention in doubles.
The Tigers, now ranked No. 32 in the nation by the ITA, won a program-record 20 matches this season and 10 against fellow ranked teams on their way to their second straight Ivy League title. No Ivy opponent got more than two team points against Princeton, which will be making its second straight NCAA tournament appearance in two weeks.
