Princeton Finishes 32nd In Final Learfield Directors' Cup Standings
July 01, 2010 | General
The Princeton University athletic program finished 32nd in the final 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings. It was Princeton's best final standing since finishing 21st in 2001-02 and its seventh-best performance in the 17 years the standings have been kept.
Princeton's finish marked the fourth straight year that Princeton has improved in the final standings, going from 63rd to 60th to 40th and now to 32nd.
The Directors' Cup uses national championship performance to measure overall athletic success. The formula assigns points based on finish in NCAA championship events, and it favors institutions with a broad-based athletic program.
Princeton finished 32nd with 619 points. The five schools directly ahead of Princeton were Notre Dame, Maryland, Kentucky, Arizona and Baylor; the five directly behind Princeton were Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Illinois, Brigham Young and West Virginia.
Stanford won for the 16th time in 17 years. Princeton was the only Ivy League school in the Top 50.
Princeton earned spring points in men's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's tennis and men's and women's track and field.
The 2009-10 athletic year saw Princeton win 12 Ivy League championships, the Ivy League's unofficial all-sports points championship for the 24th straight year and a team or individual national championship for the 39th straight year.
