Clarion Uses Late Surge For 22-15 Win; Frey Picks Up 20th Victory
January 08, 2011 | Wrestling
Despite a second-period technical fall by junior Daniel Kolodzik and a trio of other victories, the Princeton wrestling team fell to Clarion University Friday evening in the first match of a two-day road weekend. Princeton will take on EIWA rival Franklin & Marshall Saturday at noon. You can watch Saturday's match for free by clicking here.
Princeton hung tough with a strong Clarion program, but a 6-4 victory advantage for the host was enough for the 22-15 team victory. Tiger sophomore Garrett Frey picked up his 20th win of the season with a 7-2 win at 125 pounds, but Clarion rebounded with three straight wins to open a 10-3 edge. Princeton freshman Brandon Rolnick nearly knocked off a 13-win wrestler in Anthony White, but White held on for a 3-2 win.
Kolodzik cut the deficit to 10-8 with a technical fall in 3:30; the victory builds on the momentum of his eighth place finish in the Southern Scuffle and gives him 16 wins on the season. Clarion's Bekzod Abdurakhmonov picked up his 15th win with a pin of Andy Lowy, who was making his season debut at 165.
Tiger freshman Ryan Callahan kept Princeton alive with a 6-2 win over Scott Joseph, and senior captain Travis Erdman followed with a 12-2 major decision over Steven Cressley, who came into the match with 10 wins on the season. Erdman, featured on this past week's TigerCast, won his 12th match of the season to even the team score at 15-15.
Clarion had the advantage in the upperweights to put the match away. Alex Thomas scored a 10-0 major decision over Dan Santoro to move the score to 19-15, and Quintas McCorkle clinched the win with an 8-3 victory.
