Women's Hockey Starts Season with Win Over #8 Northeastern

PRINCETON, N.J. (10/21/11) - The Princeton women's hockey team started the 2011-12 season with a 5-3 win over No. 8 Northeastern, handing the Huskies their first loss of the season.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first period and would retain that lead for the remainder of the game. A trio of Princeton penalties in the second period gave Northeastern an edge as the Huskies took a 14-1 shot advantage in the period. Princeton would add two more goals to take a 4-1 lead early in the third but Northeastern edged within one with two quick goals. The Tigers would seal the win with a shorthanded empty-net goal in the waning seconds.
Princeton's top line of sophomores Sally Butler, Olivia Mucha and Denna Laing combined for nine points and would team up for the Tigers' first two goals. Butler tallied the first goal at 16:34 and Mucha added the second at 19:16 in similar fashion with goals from the right side.
Northeastern had the only goal in the second period. Rachel Lianes had the puck behind the cage and pushed it forward to Kelly Wallace who was skating across the goal mouth and slipped it in on netminder Rachel Weber.
Butler and Mucha scored within 1:15 of each other to five the Tigers a 4-1 lead just 4:36 into the third period.
Northeastern would make it a one-goal game 56 seconds later. Katie MacSorley stripped the puck and scored an unassisted goal at 5:10 and Stephanie Gavronsky scored a power-play goal at 6:06.
Princeton's Heather Landry picked up a checking penalty at 18:28 prompting Northeastern to call a timeout. When play resumed the Huskies won the draw and put two shots on goal with Weber making both stops.
With 45 seconds remaining, Northeastern pulled Florence Schelling but 35 seconds later Laing picked up an errant pass in the Princeton end and sent it down the ice where Kelly Cooke stuffed in the short-handed empty net with 10 seconds left.
Weber made 32 saves in her first win over the season, while Schelling made seven as Northeastern had a 35-12 advantage in shots. Each team had a power-play goal with Princeton converting once on three chances and Northeastern once on six.Princeton hosts Niagara, tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.
