No. 3 Cornell Gets by Women's Hockey, 3-1
November 19, 2011 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (11/18/11) - Senior goalie Rachel Weber stopped a season-high 36 shots but it was not enough as No. 3 Cornell escaped Baker Rink with a 3-1 victory over Princeton on Friday, Nov. 18.
Weber allowed two goals in just under 59 minutes of action, getting pulled for the final minute as the Tigers brought in an extra player in an attempt to tie the game. Cornell was able to thwart Princeton's attack and score the empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining to put the contest out of reach.
Weber's saves total was her highest since she tallied a career-best 41 against Clarkson on Jan. 29, 2011.
Princeton gave the No. 3 ranked Big Red all it could handle. Although the Big Red outshot its opponent, 39-18, Weber's performance kept her team in the game throughout the entire 60 minutes.
After a scoreless opening period, the two teams traded goals during a 10-minute stretch in the second. Cornell got on the scoreboard first at the 1:42 mark as Emily Fulton was able to get the puck past Weber. But Princeton bounced back as senior Danielle DiCesare netted the equalizer at the 10:12 mark off an assist from Ali Pankowski. For DiCesare, the score was her first of the year.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Big Red was able to score the gamewinner two minutes later when Catherine White and Laura Fortino assisted Alyssa Gagliardi on the goal. Cornell's 2-1 lead held until the final minute of the contest, when the road team tallied the empty net score.
Cornell is now 6-1, 5-1 while Princeton falls to 4-4-1, 3-3-1.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow, Nov. 19, with a home match against Colgate at 4 p.m.
