Men's Squash Sweeps Penn To Claim Ivy League Opener
December 04, 2011 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team earned a hard-fought 9-0 victory over host Penn in the Ivy League opener Saturday at the Ringe Squash Courts. Three freshmen won their first career Ivy League matches, including Samuel Kang, who made his collegiate debut in a 3-1 win.
Princeton took control of the match in the opening shift with victories in all four matches. Seniors Chris Callis and Clay Blackiston both scored 3-0 wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively, while junior Steve Harrington won a 3-0 match at No. 6.
The toughest match of the first shift came at No. 8, where Ash Egan won all the odd games in a 3-2 victory. After splitting the first two, he went into extra points to score a 13-11 win in the third. His 11-8 win in the fifth gave Princeton full control heading into the second shift.
Junior Todd Harrity, the reining individual national champion, was pushed hard by Penn senior Thomas Mattsson in a match at the No. 1 spot. Even at one game apiece and 9-all in the third, Harrity won the final two points to grab a 2-1 lead and finished the match with an 11-3 victory. Sophomore Dylan Ward also grabbed a win at No. 7 for the Tigers.
From there, head coach Bob Callahan watched three freshmen have successful Ivy League debuts. Tyler Osborne rallied from a 2-1 hole at the No. 3 position with wins of 11-6 and 11-6 over Dan Greenberg. Taylor Tutrone played a three-game marathon at No. 9, with each game going well beyond the 11-point mark. He topped Hunter Schlacks 19-17, 15-13, 16-14 for Princeton's eighth win.
Kang had missed the first few weeks of the season with an injury, but he made his return with an 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4 win at the No. 5 spot.
Princeton will play twice at home next weekend, beginning with a Friday night match against Williams (6 p.m.). The Tigers will host George Washington Saturday at 2 p.m.
