Women's Hockey Falls in Season Finale to Quinnipiac
February 26, 2011 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (2/26/11) - An early second period goal from Quinnipiac's Brittany Lyons proved to be the difference as the Bobcats topped the Princeton women's hockey team 2-0 to claim the best-of-three ECAC quarterfinal series on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. The loss ends Princeton's season at 16-14-1.
Quinnipiac controlled much of the first period in a copy of Friday's first game, but again the teams went to the locker rooms even in a scoreless game. On Friday Princeton scored an early goal in the second, but on this day it would Quinnipiac jumping ahead as Kelly Babstock won an offensive zone faceoff back to defenseman Felicia Vieweg. Vieweg took a shot that Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber stopped, but the rebound dropped in front for Lyons to stuff in.
From that point on, Quinnipiac played very tight defensively to limit Princeton's chances at drawing even in the game. Princeton's best chances came with about three minutes left in the third period when both Olivia Mucha and Denna Laing had point blank shots saved by Quinnipiac netminder Victoria Vigilanti.
Princeton pulled Weber late looking for the equalizer but surrendered an empty-net goal to Erica Uden Johansson with 16 seconds remaining after Babstock gained control of the puck in the Bobcat zone.
Vigilanti made 18 saves in the win while Weber stopped 23 in the loss.
Quinnipiac advances to Thursday's ECAC semifinals and will play at either Cornell or Harvard depending on the outcome of tomorrow's third game between Clarkson and Dartmouth. The loss ends Princeton's season at 16-14-1.
