Letourneau Goes Distance For Perfection, 7-2 Tiger Victory
February 06, 2011 | Men's Squash
Senior David Letourneau's quest for a perfect career in Ivy League team matches was put to the test Sunday afternoon at the Jadwin Squash Courts. Like his teammates, he passed with flying colors. Letourneau scored a 3-2 win over Harvard's Richard Hill to lead the third-ranked Tigers to a 7-2 win over the sixth-ranked Crimson.
Letourneau took on J. Reed Endresen in the No. 2 match during Sunday's Ivy League finale for the Tigers. Princeton, ahead 2-1 after a strong first shift from Christopher Callis and Nikhil Seth, looked to clinch in the second shift and took the first step with a 3-0 win for senior co-captain Peter Sopher. Junior Clay Blackiston was tested mightily in a 3-1 victory over Alexander Ma; after leading 2-1, Blackiston went into extra points before finally pulling out a 3-1 win.
That left Letourneau, whose path to perfection looked good after wins of 11-9 in the first and 11-7 in the third games. But Endresen won the two even games, sending the match to a fifth. Letourneau used his big-match experience and the home court advantage to earn an 11-6 victory.
Princeton added a win for No. 1 Todd Harrity, who all but clinched Ivy League Player of the Year honors, and one for No. 4 Kelly Shannon to finish off a 7-2 victory over the Crimson.
"There were very close matches but our guys played well in the big points," head coach Bob Callahan said. "Harvard competed very well and was very impressive."
Princeton faces a daunting home weekend coming up. It opens Saturday against No. 4 Rochester in a rematch of the 3/4 playoff in last year's CSA team championships. On Sunday, the Tigers will take on 12-time reigning national champion Trinity at 2 p.m.; it will be the teams' first meeting at Jadwin since the historic 2009 team final, which the Bantams won 5-4 in a classic that lasted more than six hours.
