Men's Squash Opens Huge Week With Rivalry Renewal At Trinity
January 30, 2012 | Men's Squash
The third-ranked Princeton men's squash team will make its post-Finals return to the court this week with matches at No. 2 Trinity Wednesday and against No. 1 Yale Saturday.
Apparently, the Egyptian National Team wasn't available on Friday.
Princeton is 8-0 on the season, and it has already scored wins against both No. 4 Rochester and No. 5 Harvard, but it takes a step up in class this week. Lurking at the end of the week could be both the inside track to the Ivy League title and the team's first No. 1 national ranking in more than 15 years.
Of course, getting there will take a massive effort, and that starts Wednesday in Hartford against the 13-time reigning national champion Trinity Bantams.
Trinity saw its 252-match win streak come to an end after a 5-4 thriller against Yale, but the Bantams have shown they have more than enough talent to win another national title. Led by senior standouts Vikram Malhotra and Antonio Diaz Glez, Trinity has rolled since its loss to Yale. Included in its recent five-match win streak was a 7-2 win over Yale, where the Bantams won seven of the bottom eight matches.
Trinity also defeated Rochester 7-2, and it has won 22 straight over Princeton, including seven national championship finals.
This Princeton team could be rounding into form at the right time. While the 1-2 punch of Todd Harrity and Chris Callis has been especially strong this season, Princeton is hoping senior co-captain Kelly Shannon will find his form after an early-season injury. Freshmen Tyler Osborne and Samuel Kang have been consistently strong during the season, though they'll both face their toughest tests this week.
