Men's Hockey Rallies for 4-3 Win Over Connecticut
January 31, 2012 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/31/12) - Sophomore Andrew Calof scored twice in the third period as the Princeton men's hockey team rallied for a 4-3 win over Connecticut on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Baker Rink.
It was the Tigers' first game in 17 days, following exams, and extends their unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1).
UConn had a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period, scoring twice in the final 15 seconds. Junior Eric Meland would get the Tigers within one in the second, before Calof scored twice in the final frame. Meland finished with three points on the night adding two assists, making his career total against UConn nine points in three games with a +6 on-ice rating.
Miles Winter scored a power-play goal from the left point at 6:57 with Marcell Ranallo and Rui Encarnacao earning assists to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Will Ford scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 15:39. Meland sent the puck down low to Ford who sent it behind the cage to Kleebaum. Kleebaum skated back around the right side and shoveled the puck towards the goal where Ford popped it over the goal line.
The Huskies scored twice, with 15 seconds left and five seconds left, both off of face offs in their offense zone. Tom Janosz picked up a pass from Kevin Tuohy and shot the puck through traffic and passed a screened Mike Condon. Ten seconds later Jordan Sims won the draw back to Alex Gerke who sent a cross ice pass to Cole Schneider who one-timed the puck over the shoulder of Condon.
Meland scored the lone goal of the second period, at 14:04. Sophomore Kevin Ross shot the puck from the top of the slot that deflected to the right post where Rob Kleebaum pushed it in front of goalie Garrett Bartus to the stick of Meland.
Calof evened the game at 3:10 and scored the game winner less than three minutes later. Meland rifled a shot from the right side that was blocked out front. Senior Marc Hagel fought off two defenders and pushed the puck to sophomore Jack Berger inside the slot. Berger fed Calof in the left circle and Calof skated unimpeded around the back of the net and stuffed the puck in on the right side.
Calof knocked in a rebound just 2:47 later. Sophomore Kevin Ross shot from the top of the slot and Meland got a piece of it, changing its trajectory. Kleebaum redirected the puck out in front to Calof on the near post who went top shelf for the goal.
Condon finished the game with 28 saves in his third win of the season as Princeton concludes its non-conference schedule.
Bartus made 20 stops for the Huskies who fall to 12-13-2 and 0-3 all-time against the Tigers.
Princeton was 1 for 3 on the power play and 4 for 5 on the penalty kill and trailed UConn in shots 31-24.
Now 7-10-5 on the season, Princeton will host Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
