Brown Rallies For 28-21 Home Wrestling Victory
February 03, 2012 | Wrestling
Midway through Friday's Ivy League wrestling showdown in Providence, Princeton had won four straight matches and seemed in control with a 17-4 lead. The second half of the match belonged to Brown, which used four pins to race by the Tigers for a 28-21 victory.
A 16-4 major decision for Princeton senior Kurt Brendel at 197 ended a three-match losing streak and set up the heavyweight match between Princeton's Charles Fox and Brown's Sterling Hecox as a winner-take-all showdown. Hecox wouldn't let it be a long or dramatic match, though; he pinned Fox in 57 seconds to give Brown the win.
After Princeton freshman Ryan Cash lost a 15-7 major decision to open the match, the Tigers turned to several of their winningest starters to gain control. Freshman Chris Perez earned a 7-2 win at 133, and No. 14 Adam Krop pinned Grant Overcashier in the second period to open a 9-4 lead, and Zach Bintliff took an 8-2 decision to move the advantage to 12-4.
When 19th-ranked Daniel Kolodzik finished off a 16-0 technical fall in the third period, Brown knew it needed wins and bonus points. It got both, the Bears rolled off three straight pins to regain the lead 22-17. Brendel gave Princeton a chance in the final match with his major, but it wouldn't be enough to give the Tigers their first Ivy League win of the season.
