Doar Wins Presidential Medal Of Freedom; Carlos To Speak On Campus

John Doar, a 1944 Princeton grad and Civil Rights pioneer, will be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom later this spring.
Doar is one of 13 honorees for the 2012 award, and he will be joined by a diverse group that includes musician Bob Dylan, basketball coach Pat Summitt, astronaut/Senator John Glenn, former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and Princeton humanities icon and author Toni Morrison.
The Medal of Freedom is nation's highest civilian honor, presented "to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."
Doar was the most recent Princeton Varsity Club Jake McCandless Speaker Series guest, after his appeareance last fall here on campus.
The next speaker in the series will be another Civil Rights legend, John Carlos, the 1968 Olympic sprinter known for his controversial stance on the medal platform after he won the bronze medal in the 200 meters.
Carlos will speak at 7:30 Wednesday night (May 2), in Dodd Auditorium at Robertson Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.
