February 23, 2013 | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (2/22/13) - The Princeton women's hockey team earned a significant 2-1 win over Brown on Friday, Feb. 22. The victory keeps the Tigers alive for playoff contention. If Princeton defeats Yale tomorrow, it will clinch the No. 8 seed in the ECAC Tournament.
Princeton grabbed an early lead when junior Olivia Mucha scored an unassisted 1:10 into the game. Mucha deked netminder Aubree Moore and tucked the puck in low on the blocker side.
Alena Polenska knotted the game at 1-1 at 13:14. Samantha Woodward sent a pass to Brittany Moorehead in the neutral zone. Moorehead skated in and took a shot on freshman Kimberly Newell. The save rebounded back out on the ice and Polenska was there to buy the rebound.
Freshman Molly Contini scored the game winner with 2:15 to play in the opening period. She and senior Kelly Cooke had a 2x1 and Contini backhanded the puck past Moore for the go-ahead goal.
The final two periods were scoreles with each team having two power-play opportunities.
Newell earned her 10th win of the season, stopping 23 shots. Moore made 29 saves in the losing effort.
Princeton improves to 11-15-2 overall and 6-13-2 in the ECAC.
The Tigers will face Yale tomorrow, Feb. 23 at Ingalls Rink. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
