Men's Water Polo Advances to CWPA Championship With 6-3 Win Over Navy
November 23, 2014 | Men's Water Polo
Dispatching of the Midshipmen for the third time this season, the Tigers extended their win streak to 12 games and improved to 23-3 overall. Princeton will face Northern Division champion and top-seeded Brown University on Sunday, Nov. 23. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Earlier this season the Orange and Black clipped the Bears at the Ivy Tournament, 9-7.
Staking Princeton to an early lead, Jordan Colina netted his 50th goal of the season just 25 seconds after the opening sprint. With less than four minutes to go in the period, Colina linked up with Drew Hoffenberg, setting up the senior co-captain's team-high 60th tally. Taking advantage of a man-up advantage in the waning moments of the first, Sam Butler beat Navy goalie Garrett Sabesky with just four seconds left on the clock to make it 3-0.
With Navy's Carpenter Warren netting the only goal of the second quarter, Princeton took a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Opening up the second half scoring, Colina once again assisted on a Hoffenberg score to up the Tiger margin to three. Coming right back, Thomas Patterson found the back of the cage at 1:39 to keep the Midshipmen within striking distance. With 55 seconds left in the third, Jamie Kuprenas answered to give the visitors a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame.
Padding the Princeton cushion, Butler made it a four-goal affair with a tally just 47 seconds into the fourth quarter. Robert Sutherland pulled Navy back within three with a goal at 3:22, but the deficit proved too big to overcome with the Tigers holding onto a three-goal margin of victory.
Hoffenberg and Butler each finished with a pair of scores to lead the Princeton attack. Going 3-0 on sprints for the second consecutive tournament game, Colina added a goal and a team-high four assists. Logging all 32 minutes in net, Tiger goalie Vojislav Mitrovic made 14 saves.
