Kelly Matthews Claims Ivy League Volleyball Rookie Of The Week Honor
November 04, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
After leading Princeton in kills Saturday and helping the Tigers get right back in the Ivy League race, freshman outside hitter Kelly Matthews picked up her first Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor.
Matthews, a starter throughout the Ivy season for Princeton, averaged 2.7 kills and 4.3 digs per set during victories over both Columbia and Cornell. She had a career-high 11 kills in the win over Cornell, and she hit .400 (11-1-25) during the 3-0 win; one night earlier, she recorded a career-best 22 digs in a 3-1 win over Columbia.
"Kelly was fabulous offensively and defensively this weekend," head coach Sabrina King said. "We were able to distribute our offense because she had the hot hand against Columbia and Cornell. We have been waiting for her to break out and it's coming at a great time."
Princeton will play its final home matches this weekend, and they couldn't be more significant for a Tiger team that has battled its way back into contention. The Tigers are currently 7-3 in the Ivy League, while both Harvard and Yale share first place with 8-2 Ivy records. Princeton plays both teams once more, so it can assure itself at least a share of the Ivy title if it can win its final four matches.
