April 28, 2014 | General
John Van Ryn Jr. '28 was one of Princeton tennis' greatest athletes. In 1927, he won the U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, and in 1929 at Wimbledon, he won the first of four career Grand Slams with his doubles partner. Van Ryn produced Davis Cup records of 7-1 in singles and 22-2 in doubles. He and his wife, Cornelia Drake, the daughter of a Princeton alumnus, left Princeton tennis a significant gift, which supported in 2006 the creation of new permanent assistant coaching positions for the men's and women's tennis programs.
