Men's Squash Knocks Off No. 8 Dartmouth, Keeps Pushing Towards Team Champs
January 11, 2015 | Men's Squash
Princeton took two of three matches in every shift to improve to 3-4 on the season, 1-1 in the Ivy League, and set up arguably the most important match of the season; following the finals break, the Tigers will host Penn in a match that would likely give the winner an inside track to the team championships.
The Tigers got a momentum-changing victory in the opening shift from junior Michael LeBlanc, who outlasted Brian Giegerich for a 3-2 win at the No. 6 spot. Both teams got 3-0 wins in the other matches, including a 3-0 win for Ben Leizman, but LeBlanc needed to fight off a marathon 15-13 loss in the fourth game to bounce back in the fifth. LeBlanc came up with a quality final performance to earn the 11-7 victory.
Princeton took care of business in impressive fashion during the second shift, sweeping both matches at No. 2 and No. 8 to move within one match of the victory. Senior All-America Tyler Osborne allowed only 10 points in his victory over Alexander Greer, while freshman Abhimanyu Shah pulled out an 11-9 win in the opener before cruising to a win at No. 8.
That left Princeton needing only one victory, but it took some serious work to get there. Junior Sam Ezratty dropped the opener 11-9, and that turned out to be the quickest game of the match. It also happened to be the only one he would lose; he rallied from a 10-3 deficit in the third for a 14-12 win, then fought off a rally by Glen Brickman for a 12-10 win in the decisive fourth game.
That victory clinched the team win for Princeton, but there was still plenty of excitement on the main court. Senior Samuel Kang found himself in a 2-1 hole to Nicholas Harrington, but the tireless Kang won 11-4 and 11-5 to earn the sixth win for the Tigers.
Princeton will host Penn Wed., Jan. 28, at 5:30 pm in a huge Ivy League doubleheader. That match will be followed by a women's showdown with Penn, which knocked off No. 1 Harvard Sunday afternoon.
