Men's Squash Faces Important Road Showdown vs. Ninth-Ranked Drexel
November 30, 2015 | Men's Squash
There was a time, not that long ago, when the December schedule for the men's squash team was a mere formality. Those days are long gone, and the Tigers open an important week Tuesday night at No. 10 Drexel.
The Dragons will host Princeton at 6:30 pm inside the Kline & Specter Squash Center for a match that could have important implications on the eventual CSA Team Championships. Princeton is currently ranked eighth in the CSA rankings, though it lost 5-4 to No. 10 Franklin & Marshall since the last rankings update.
Drexel is slotted in between Princeton and Franklin & Marshall in those rankings, and it is coming off a 5-4 loss to seventh-ranked Penn last week. Though the Dragons do have a win over F&M this season, they don't want to have losses to the two teams currently ranked ahead of them.
Princeton, which earned its first win of the season over Navy prior to the Thanksgiving break, has been led early by a trio of freshmen at the top of the ladder. The trio of Cody Cortes, Clark Doyle, and Spencer Anton have played the top three spots, while two of the next three have been held by sophomores Jarryd Osborne and Abhimanyu Shah.
The youth movement, though challenging against a deep national field this year, is a positive sign for the rebuilding process, especially after the graduation of four seniors last year — including All-Americas Samuel Kang and Tyler Osborne.
Of course, head coach Sean Wilkinson would like to see his youth make a push back towards the A flight, and this week could provide the foundation for that movement. Besides Tuesday's match at Drexel, Princeton will host No. 3 St. Lawrence and No. 4 Rochester this weekend.
