The senior quartet of Sarah Daschbach, Anne Ferlmann, Stephanie Marani, and Kendall Peterkin wrapped up their Dillon Gym careers Saturday night with a home victory over Brown. Now their goal is extend their collegiate careers beyond next weekend.
To think that was even a possibility three weeks ago would have seemed a reach to even the most optimistic supporter, but these resilient Tigers have made this final weekend a thrilling one in the Ivy League championship chase.
Junior Cara Mattaliano led Princeton with 18 kills, while Peterkin recorded 15 kills, 13 digs and three blocks in a 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 victory over the Brown Bears. The victory was Princeton's fifth in a row and moves the Tigers to 8-4 in Ivy League play with one weekend remaining.
Harvard, which swept Columbia 3-0 in its final home match of the season, will enter next weekend with a 9-3 mark in Ivy League play, while both Princeton and Dartmouth are 8-4. Princeton will travel to the Empire State to take on Cornell (Friday, 7) and Columbia (Saturday, 5). Both Harvard and Dartmouth will be on the road to take on Brown and five-time reigning Ivy League champion Yale; the Bulldogs (7-5 Ivy) kept their title hopes alive with a win at Penn.
Princeton had to work to knock off the upset-minded Bears Saturday. Brown grabbed an early lead in the opener, but two-time reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Claire Nussbaum (37 assists, 14 digs) served Princeton on a late 8-0 run to take the set. After a 25-18 win in the second, the Tigers got two late kills from Peterkin and an ace from Mattaliano to close the final set.
