Trinity Match Moved To 11am Saturday; Sam Kang Discusses Career, '12 Title
February 12, 2015 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team will honor its Class of 2015 and play its final home match of the team season Saturday against top-ranked Trinity. Due to weather concerns for Trinity's trip home, the match has been moved up to 11 am.
Princeton (5-7) may need the upset over Trinity (16-1) to clinch a spot in the 'A' flight at nationals — held the following weekend at Trinity — after dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker at Cornell last weekend. Of Princeton's seven losses this season, four have been by either 5-4 or 6-3 scores.
The Tigers will be looking for their first win over Trinity since the historic 2012 national final (check out this YouTube clip for the thrilling final moments), when Princeton ended the Bantams' 13-year championship reign. Two members of the current Class of 2015, Tyler Osborne and Samuel Kang, were members of the starting lineup who helped carry Princeton to that championship.
Osborne had arguably the biggest individual win of the day, if not the last two decades of Princeton squash. After losing eight of his previous nine matches to Miled Zarazua, Osborne posted an 11-7, 11-8, 11-9 victory that ultimately have Princeton a chance in the final shift. Kang fell in his match, but his semifinal victory over William Hartigan, an 11-8, 7-11, 11-7, 11-13, 11-8 marathon, came at a critical time and helped hold off a Big Red rally effort.
Both players will still have one more weekend at home, as Jadwin will serve as host for the 2015 individual national championships in three weeks, but this will be their final team match, along with classmates David Hoffman, Jacob Lee and Taylor Tutrone. The Class of 2015 helped lead Princeton to two Ivy League titles and the 2012 national title, as well as helped lay the foundation for the Robert W. Callahan '77 Head Coach of Men's Squash Sean Wilkinson, who took over after the retirement of Hall of Famer Bob Callahan.
Kang's career has included both team and individual honors, and he recently shared some of his perspectives with GoPrincetonTigers.TV, which you can see by clicking the play link in the photo above.
