Fourth-Ranked Columbia Fends Off Men's Squash For 6-3 Victory Friday
February 06, 2015 | Men's Squash
Princeton got victories from senior All-America Tyler Osborne, as well as from the freshman duo of Abhimanyu Shah and Komron Shayegan.
Shayegan had the most dramatic victory of the afternoon, as he rallied past Jonathan Gill after a 2-1 deficit and played his strongest squash of the season late in a five-game victory. That gave the Tigers one victory during the opening shift, though both David Hoffman and Sam Ezratty fell 3-0 apiece.
Osborne met Osama Khalifa, the younger brother of former individual national champion Amr Khalifa, in a highly entertaining match at No. 2. Each of the first two games were close, though the veteran Osborne played his best points at the end for two emphatic wins. He rolled in the final game for an 11-2 victory to keep Princeton in the match.
Columbia stayed ahead with wins at both No. 5 and No. 8, and it eventually clinched the team win when Lions senior Ramit Tandon, the likely Ivy League Player of the Year, topped Princeton senior Samuel Kang 3-0 at the No. 1 position.
Shah overcame an injury midway through the third game to claim both the third and fourth for a 3-1 win at the No. 7 spot. Classmate Jarryd Osborne energized the crowd early at the No. 4 spot with a 1-0 lead over Rishi Tandon, but he was unable to hold on for the win.
Princeton will spend Saturday honoring its legendary former head coach Bob Callahan, the Hall of Fame inductee who passed away last week at the age of 59. The Tigers will follow that with a trip to Ithaca for a crucial match at Cornell. The eighth-ranked Tigers need a strong result to stay in good position for the 'A' flight at the upcoming CSA national team championships.
