Princeton Finishes 33rd In Learfield Directors' Cup
July 06, 2016 | General
The 2015-16 athletic year was, by any definition, a wildly successful one for the Princeton Tigers.
Princeton teams combined to win 14 Ivy League championships and 15 league championships overall with the men's water polo team factored in. Princeton did something never before done by winning 10 Ivy League championships by a single gender, with 10 Ivy women's titles this academic year. Princeton also swept the four women's Ivy League titles in the fall, and no school had ever won every sport for one gender in one season prior to that.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup is another big metric of athletic success, with its points system designed to reward performance in NCAA championship events.
The 2015-16 Princeton Tigers finished 33rd in Division I, the highest finish for the program since a 32nd-place finish in 2010. Princeton was the only Ivy League school in the top 60 in Division I, was the only non-BCS school in the top 50 and was the second-highest ranked team in a non-power conference, two spots behind BYU.
Princeton has now been the highest-finishing Ivy school in 20 of the 23 years the Cup has been awarded. Princeton has also finished in the top 40 14 times in 23 years, has been in the top 50 20 times and has never finished lower than 63rd.
The Tigers received points in baseball, women's lacrosse, women's tennis, softball, women's open rowing and men's and women's track and field in the spring. Princeton finished the year with 651 points; the three schools immediately behind Princeton were Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn.
