#1 Trinity Defeats Princeton; Tigers Host Ivy Opener Saturday
January 09, 2017 | Men's Squash
The top-ranked Trinity men's squash team stayed perfect on the season Monday afternoon, but the 11th-ranked Princeton Tigers left Jadwin feeling optimistic about their level of play, and excited about the possibilities in front of them this weekend.
The Bantams, winners of 15 of the last 17 national championships, didn't drop many individual games throughout the day, but they were forced to work for each one of them. Of Trinity's 27 individual games won, the Princeton opponent reached at least five points in 22, and most times were within 2-3 points at the end; last year, Princeton players didn't reach the fifth point in 12 individual games. While Trinity had the goods to win the biggest points, Princeton continues to prove that it is drawing closer to the elite class in the sport.
Senior co-captain Ben Leizman had the most competitive match of the day, as he pushed Andrew Lee to five games at the No. 8 spot before ultimate falling 11-4 in the fifth. Leizman won games of 12-10 and 11-8 during the marathon, while freshman teammate Shehab Thabet posted an 11-8 win in his opener at the No. 7 spot.
Princeton will now spend the rest of the week preparing for a crucial Ivy League weekend, which begins Saturday at 2:30 against ninth-ranked Dartmouth. Following that match, the Tigers will turn their attention to Sunday and a 2:30 showdown against fourth-ranked Harvard.
