Freshman Sweeps Help Men's Squash To 9-0 Win At F&M
November 18, 2017 | Men's Squash
A season of optimism for the Princeton men's squash team started off in strong fashion Saturday, as the Tigers opened the year with a 9-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa. The Tigers sent all four of their freshmen to the court for their collegiate debuts, and each came away with 3-0 victories.
The match was played in two shifts, and the tightest contest of the day came on Court 1, as All-America sophomore Adhitya Raghavan was pushed in four tough games by Shams Abbas. After dropping an 11-9 opener, Raghavan took an 11-7 win and then came up with the late points in back-to-back 12-10 wins.
Junior Cody Cortes posted a comfortable win in his season debut at No. 4, and co-captains Komron Shayegan and Abhimanyu Shah both earned wins to give Princeton a 4-0 lead going into the second half of the match.
Youssef Ibrahim, Princeton's highly touted No. 1 player, had a fight on his hands early against Sanjay Jeeva, but he settled in after a 13-11 opener and allowed only three points in the final two games. That was one highlight of an exciting session for Tiger head coach Sean Wilkinson, who got to see all four members of the Class of 2021 win their debuts.
Cole Becker had hard-fought wins of 13-11 and 12-10 in his win at 3, while Duncan Joyce won three 11-8 wins for a victory at 5. Alex Engstrom also played three tight games, but he won them all at 7, and sophomore Henry Parkhurst was in full control of his win at 9, where he dropped only six points in the match.
The eighth-ranked Tigers will get a good test Sunday when the head to Washington, D.C., to face the 11th-ranked Colonials of George Washington in an 11 am match.
