Men's Squash Nearly Stuns #3 St. Lawrence, Tops Williams; Ibrahim Wins Dramatic Home Debut
December 02, 2017 | Men's Squash
The main event Saturday more than lived up to the hype, but the eighth-ranked Princeton men's squash team nearly pulled off a stunner to go along with the thriller at the No. 1 spot. Tiger freshman Youssef Ibrahim won a five-game thriller over Ahmed Bayoumy, the third-ranked player in the country at the end of last season, but it was Ibrahim's older brother who helped fend off a major upset bid in Princeton's 2017-18 home opener.
St. Lawrence sophomore Karim Ibrahim held off a game effort by Princeton freshman Cole Becker at the No. 3 spot, winning the final two games 11-9 to help the third-ranked Saints hold on for a 5-4 victory over the Tigers. Regardless, Princeton made an early statement that it was indeed ready to play with the best teams in the country this season.
And the latter match on Court 1 could stand with any played at Jadwin over the last decade. Youssef Ibrahim, the former British Junior Open champion, wowed the Court 1 crowd early, scoring an 11-0 win in his first ever home game at Jadwin. Bayoumy, a former U.S. Junior Open champion, dropped a tight second before winning the third and fourth games, but Ibrahim was able to regain the advantage in the finale. He grabbed a lead and then fought off one charge after another before hitting a perfect short shot for the 11-8 win.
Classmate Alex Engstrom had already given Princeton a win at the No. 8 spot, and senior co-captain Abhimanyu Shah added a dominant effort at No. 9 to put Princeton in upset territory. St. Lawrence opened up with wins at 2, 4, and 6, and Lockie Munro added a 3-0 win at No. 7. Princeton needed to sweep the final two matches, and both freshman Cole Becker and junior Clark Doyle battled hard. Doyle had a slight hiccup in his third game, but he dominated the other three games to score the 3-1 win.
Becker's task was a major one, and he pushed Ibrahim hard throughout, but Ibrahim found the big late points for the 11-6, 11-9, 11-9 win.
Princeton didn't suffer a letdown during the second half of the doubleheader, as the Tigers took care of business with an 8-1 win over Williams.
