Cortes Completes Unbeaten Ivy Season, But Men's Squash Team Falls 6-3 To Third-Ranked Columbia
February 12, 2017 | Men's Squash
Sophomore Cody Cortes completed one of the most incredible runs in Ivy League play Sunday afternoon, but his winning effort wasn't enough to lead Princeton to a massive upset to end its 2016-17 regular season. Tenth-ranked Princeton took two of the first three matches, but No. 3 Columbia improved to 6-1 in Ivy League play with a 6-3 victory at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
Cortes improved to 10-3 on the season and won his eighth straight match with a 3-1 comeback win at the No. 3 spot. Adham Madi jumped out with an 11-6 win, but Cortes pulled out 11-9 and 15-13 thrillers to open a 2-1 lead. He finished the match off 11-7 to complete a perfect Ivy season; playing at either the No. 3 or No. 4 spot throughout the Ivy season, Cortes won four of his seven Ivy matches by 3-2 scores.
While Cortes was winning, freshman Henry Parkhurst rallied from a 2-1 deficit to claim wins of 11-4 and 11-6 to earn victory at the No. 8 spot. It was the second straight 3-2 win for Parkhurst, who also won in five games Friday to help Princeton post a 6-3 win over Cornell.
Columbia would take control over the next two shifts, though most of the remaining matches featured several two-point games. Junior Komron Shayegan when extra points twice at the No. 6 spot, but he was unable to take either in a loss at No. 6. Sophomore William Oon did win a 13-11 thriller to open his match at No. 9, and his opponent ultimately defaulted in the second game to give Princeton its third win of the day.
Princeton honored its lone senior, Ben Leizman, prior to the match. The captain has 24 career wins at Princeton, and he will look to add to that total when the Tigers head to Boston this coming weekend to compete in the Hoehn Cup draw at the CSA Team Championships.
