Princeton Handles Cornell Again, Will Rematch Dartmouth For Hoehn Cup Sunday
February 18, 2017 | Men's Squash
Princeton got a second shot Saturday to repeat its best win of the season.
On Sunday, the Tigers will get a chance to avenge their most heartbreaking loss.
The Princeton men's squash team defeated Cornell 7-2 Saturday in the semifinal of the CSA Hoehn Cup draw, which will send the Tigers into a finals showdown against the higher-seeded Dartmouth Big Green. Dartmouth fought off multiple match points in January to come away with a 5-4 win in Jadwin during the Ivy League opener.
While that match served as the league opener, Sunday's match will close the team schedule for a Princeton squad that has made significant strides over the last month. That was evident Saturday, as the Tigers defeated a strong Cornell squad despite missing two starters from the top half of their lineup. Sophomores Clark Doyle and Spencer Anton are unavailable this weekend due to injuries, but their teammates showed impressive composure bouncing back from a tough Friday win and handling the Big Red im impressive fashion.
It wasn't always looking great, especially as Cornell held early leads in each of the opening-shift matches. The Big Red claimed a 3-0 win at No. 3, but both Komron Shayegan and William Oon made big rallies. Oon trailed 2-0, but won three straight 11-7 games to win at No. 9. Shayegan, who has battled through a multitude of five-game matches throughout the season, showed impressive poise in controlling the final two games 11-6 and 11-4.
Freshman Gabriel Morgan continued his strong debut season with a 3-0 win at No. 2, and classmate Henry Parkhurst built on his strong finish to the season with an 11-8 win in the fifth game of his No. 8 match.
Princeton led 4-2 at the time, but each member of the final shift took care of business in quick and efficient manner to clinch the win. Senior Ben Leizman, who clinched Friday's win with a third-shift win, closed his match with an 11-1 win, but both Adhitya Raghavan and Abhimanyu Shah both won as well.
