Freshman Adhitya Raghavan Makes Debut On All-Ivy First Team
March 22, 2017 | Men's Squash
A breakthrough season for Adhitya Raghavan — which included a berth in the British Junior Open semifinal, a 2-1 mark at the CSA team championships and a full year at the No. 1 position — concluded Wednesday when the Princeton freshman earned a spot on the 2017 All-Ivy League first team.
Despite playing a loaded schedule, filled with All-Americas from the top programs in the nation, Raghavan won seven matches, including three in Ivy League play. He had victories over Penn's Marwan Mahmoud and Dartmouth's Alvin Heumann, both of whom were also first-team All-Ivy League honorees. His win over Heumann, which came during the team championships weekend, featured a comeback from 2-0 down.
Raghavan made his biggest splash in international competition, as he reached the semifinal round of the prestigious British Junior Open, a run that included back-to-back thrillers in the middle rounds. It started with an 11-8, 5-11, 13-11, 9-11,12-10 win over the higher-seeded Karim Magdy of Egypt. The match lasted 71 minutes, the longest of the third round, but Raghavan bounced back in the quarterfinal with a 10-12, 11-3, 11-8, 14-12 victory over 9-16 seed Andrew Douglas of the USA.
Raghavan was one of six underclassmen to play in the top seven spots most of the season for Princeton, which continues to trend towards a bright future with the likes of Gabriel Morgan, Clark Doyle, Cody Cortes, Spencer Anton, and Shehab Thabet in place for at least the next two years.
